urinals, &c., 120 miles of roads and six reservoirs of a combin-
-ed capacity of 1,100 million gallons under the care of the
Department, whilst works in progress include such important
items as the Law Courts (£75,000), Post Office (£90,000), City
Water Works Extension (£85,000) and Kowloon Water Works

Negotiations for the disposal of Crown Land
are often very troublesome as many districts are absolutely
undeveloped and scheme for their development have to be prepared
before terms can be arranged. Practically all flat areas are
occupied by squatters for purposes of habitation or cultivation
and, whenever a lot applied for is situated in such an area,
terms have to be arranged with the squatters by the Public Works
Department. The re-arrangement and reconstruction of their
villages and settlement of the amounts to be paid by way of
compensation are all very troublesome matters in dealing with
